Chita Rivera was a dancer. Leonard Bernstein made her a singer, too.

And singing – plus stories – will be what fans will largely be treated to Monday night at Cotuit Center for the Arts when Rivera sits down with host/accompanist Seth Rudetsky to look back on her 65-year Broadway career.

The Indomitable Chita Rivera, Back on Broadway in ‘The Visit’

By ALEXIS SOLOSKI

Two hours before any preview performance of “The Visit,” the Kander and Ebb musical that opens this month at the Lyceum Theater, you can find its star, Chita Rivera, in her dressing room. Upside down.

At 82, Ms. Rivera is a musical theater legend — and very much living. It has taken nearly 15 years to bring “The Visit,” an adaptation of Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s 1956 tragicomedy, to Broadway, and she has stuck with the show since its early days. She is determined to play the role of Claire Zachanassian, the richest woman in the world, as fully and richly and chillingly as possible — which means plenty of headstands.

10 iconic movie-musical dances, according to a Broadway choreographer

By Marc Snetiker

If your favorite part of NBC’s dearly departed Smash was the dynamite dancing in the Broadway-style musical numbers, you can thank Joshua Bergasse, the award-winning choreographer behind them.

Bergasse, who’s also choreographed for So You Think You Can Dance, is now the dancemaster behind the new Broadway revival of On the Town, the ballet-tinged musical that opened to rave reviews in New York this October. While choreography for live theater has its differences than the dances you see on film, Bergasse grew up watching the same movie-musicals that are beloved among fans of the genre—films which have even helped inspire him in his stage work.

EW invited Bergasse into the office for a good old-fashioned YouTube spiral, wherein the Emmy winner shared ten of his all-time favorite onscreen movie-musical dance sequences. Some picks are iconic and familiar—who doesn’t love Singin’ in the Rain?—while others could very well send you scrambling to find a copy of your new favorite musical film.

Sondheim is pictured offering advice and notes alongside notable producer Goddard Lieberson, while stars Larry Kert and Carol Lawrence sip tea in between takes in some of the shots.

Then, there is the dynamite diva herself, the one and only Chita Rivera, visibly moved by the rapturous music.

Plus, Larry Kert hits the floor of the studio to really get down while recording "Cool".

Cool, indeed!

Chita Rivera Will Celebrate Her 80th Birthday With A Broadway Show

By MARK KENNEDY

NEW YORK -- Chita Rivera will celebrate her 80th birthday doing what she does best – performing a show that benefits Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Two-time Tony Award-winning singer, dancer and actress will play the August Wilson Theatre on Oct. 7 in a show written by Terrence McNally and directed by Graciela Daniele.

Says Rivera: "A girl only turns 80 once in her life, thank God, and I want everyone there as proof."

The performer, one of the stars of the recent musical "The Mystery Of Edwin Drood," actually turned 80 on Jan. 23.

She originated some of theater's most memorable roles, including Anita in 1957's "West Side Story," Rose in 1960's "Bye Bye Birdie," Velma in 1975's "Chicago" and the title role in 1993's "Kiss of the Spider Woman."
