Rita Moreno remembers West Side Story's bold, subversive 'America'
The 85-year-old film legend talks about delicious dance moves, blingy costumes, and porny shops

Joe McGovern@jmcgvrn

In 1961, Rita Moreno achieved movie immortality with her performance as the no-nonsense Anita in West Side Story. Set within a vibrant Puerto Rican community in New York City (though filmed almost entirely in Los Angeles), the film won 10 Oscars, including best supporting actress for Moreno and best picture.

The actress, now 85 and earning raves for her work on Netflix’s One Day at a Time, talked to EW about the barnstorming song-and-dance number “America,” in which she jousts with her boyfriend (George Chakiris) about the pros and cons of their adopted home.

West Side Story dances on

Inspired by William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story marks its 60th anniversary this year but its cast says its tragic tale of teenage love is just as relevant today as when it was first staged in 1957.

Centering around doomed lovers Tony and Maria, who find themselves on opposite sides of a bitter feud between rival street gangs, the popular musical takes place on the mean streets of 1950s New York.

INTERVIEW: Tyler Michaels on West Side Story and His New Theatre Company

by Basil Considine

Somali gangs in Minneapolis might get all the press, but the City of St. Paul is about to get its very own gang problem. Well, kind of – the Jets and Sharks of West Side Story are set to occupy the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts from April 4-16. This classic musical is being produced as a collaboration between the Ordway and the Teatro del Pueblo, and engages with gang rivalries, immigration tension, and other themes that remain surprisingly relevant today.

In this production, Tyler Michaels plays Tony, a former Jets member who is swept back into the violence and falls tragically in love with Maria (Evy Ortiz). Basil Considine sat down with Tyler Michaels to discuss his acting career, his new theatre company, and returning to the role of Tony.

BWW Interview: WEST SIDE STORY's Evy Ortiz Answers Six Questions & A Plug

by Kristen Hirsch Montag

The Ordway in Saint Paul opens WEST SIDE STORY April 6 with a cast of mostly local performers, including phenom Tyler Michaels as Tony.

His on-stage love interest is played by Evy Ortiz (Maria), who is a vocal match for his well-known pipes. The two make beautiful music together as the star-crossed lovers from the well-worn musical by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Steven Sondheim. The production is visually appealing, well cast and the orchestra, led by local conductor Raymond Berg, is pitch perfect. The choreography (Diane Laurenson) is recreated or at least heavily influenced from the original stage version by the looks of it so this show is everything traditionalists will want from it.

Ortiz took a moment from rehearsals this week to respond to 6 Questions & a Plug. Learn more about this lovely actor/singer and get your tickets to WEST SIDE STORY before they're all gone.

Rita Moreno Aims to Hit the Right Accent on ‘One Day at a Time’

By MONICA CASTILLO

Rita Moreno sits among rare company. In addition to her memorable roles — “West Side Story,” The King and I,” “The Electric Company” — there’s the EGOT. Ms. Moreno, 85, has won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony (hence the acronym). Only about a dozen people have done so.

Yet even the most decorated stars have those they look forward to collaborating with. “That’s the magic name,” Ms. Moreno said in a recent interview. “Norman Lear. I always wanted to work with him. And we just kept getting older.”

The musical rumble that makes listeners love ‘West Side Story’

On this day nearly six decades ago, “West Side Story” premiered on Broadway. And the music of the Sharks and the Jets, and star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria is as vibrant as it was in 1957. Jeffrey Brown sits down with composer and musician Rob Kapilow to discuss what it is about Leonard Bernstein’s hit musical style that has allowed the love story to live on for decades.

Marni Nixon Remembered: A Wonderful Collaborator, Even if Natalie Wood Didn’t Agree

Stephen Cole

“You are the writer, but I am the author!”

When famed ghost-singer Marni Nixon said those words to me, her ghostwriter, I didn’t quite understand how any of it would work. I had written previous books on my own (“That Book about That Girl,” “Noel Coward: A Bio-bibliography”), but had never been a ghostwriter before. And aren’t they one and the same: author and writer?

What I eventually learned from that “Marni-ese” was that it was all about collaboration. Over the course of a year and a half of intense back and forth work on her memoirs, “I Could Have Sung All Night” (which we almost called “Audrey Hepburn Dubbed My Face”), I came to realize that Marni Nixon was the consummate collaborator.

She was dubbed “the ghostess with the mostest” by Time Magazine when it became public knowledge that she had dubbed Deborah Kerr, Natalie Wood and Audrey Hepburn in “The King and I,” “West Side Story” and “My Fair Lady,” respectively. And although there was great respect from Kerr and Hepburn, Natalie Wood, who expected to sing all her own songs herself, ignored Marni and filmed to only her own pre-recordings.

Onstage & Backstage: Which Annie Author Starred in the Original West Side Story?

By Seth Rudetsky

Last week, I was contacted by the BBC because they’re doing a piece on West Side Story, and they wanted me to do a panel with various cast members. I booked guests on my SiriusXM radio show “Seth Speaks” and had them film it. It went so great! I had original cast member Martin Charnin (Big Deal), replacement original cast member Harvey Evans who then did the film (Gee-Tar and, in the film, Mouthpiece), Liza Gennaro (daughter of Peter who did all the Latin dances in the show), Jim Borstelman (swing in Jerome Robbins Broadway), Scott Wise (Riff in Jerome Robbins Broadway, Tony Award!) and Andrea Burns from On Your Feet, who danced as a Shark Girl and then took over as Maria in productions throughout America and Europe.
