Marni Nixon Remembered: A Wonderful Collaborator, Even if Natalie Wood Didn’t Agree

Stephen Cole

“You are the writer, but I am the author!”

When famed ghost-singer Marni Nixon said those words to me, her ghostwriter, I didn’t quite understand how any of it would work. I had written previous books on my own (“That Book about That Girl,” “Noel Coward: A Bio-bibliography”), but had never been a ghostwriter before. And aren’t they one and the same: author and writer?

What I eventually learned from that “Marni-ese” was that it was all about collaboration. Over the course of a year and a half of intense back and forth work on her memoirs, “I Could Have Sung All Night” (which we almost called “Audrey Hepburn Dubbed My Face”), I came to realize that Marni Nixon was the consummate collaborator.

She was dubbed “the ghostess with the mostest” by Time Magazine when it became public knowledge that she had dubbed Deborah Kerr, Natalie Wood and Audrey Hepburn in “The King and I,” “West Side Story” and “My Fair Lady,” respectively. And although there was great respect from Kerr and Hepburn, Natalie Wood, who expected to sing all her own songs herself, ignored Marni and filmed to only her own pre-recordings.

A Mother’s Death, a Daughter’s Life: Remembering Natalie Wood

By KATHERINE ROSMAN

LOS ANGELES — The home that Natasha Gregson Wagner shares with her husband, his sons and their daughter in Venice, a seaside neighborhood here, smells clean in a non-antiseptic way and, on a recent visit, faintly of the lilacs that rested in a vase on the kitchen countertop.

Scent matters to Ms. Gregson Wagner, 45. It’s an emotional trigger and conjurer of memory. In every home that she has lived in as an adult, she says she has planted a gardenia bush, because the smell of gardenias reminds her of her mother. “The smell is what I remember, the comfort of the smell,” she said as she sat on a banquette in her kitchen, wearing jeans and a flowered, billowy blouse. “I knew when she was home because I would smell her perfume. She would waft through the house.”

Tony and Maria

West Side Story
''Two street gangs, both alike in dignity, in fair New York City, where we lay our scene. From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes a pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life.'' Okay, the Romeo and Juliet similarities don't go quite that far, but you get the gist. Tony (Richard Beymer) loves Maria (Natalie Wood) even though he's not supposed to. Lots of fighting and musical production numbers ensue. Heartbreak all around. And...scene. —Marc Bernardin

More than 50 years ago, on October 18, 1961, Natalie Wood premiered one of her most iconic movie roles: Maria, the 20th-century twist on Shakespeare’s tragically lovelorn Juliet, in the big-screen version of West Side Story. That Wood could nail the tricky mix of effervescence and anguish the part required was no surprise — after all, at just 23 years old, she was already a Hollywood veteran, an Oscar-nominated star whose astonishing talent had been honed since the age of 4.

And at nearly every stage of her career — her early days as a cute contract moppet; her teenage Method experiments inspired by Rebel Without a Cause; her emergence as a powerful leading lady wooing Warren Beatty and Steve McQueen — LIFE magazine’s photographers were there, capturing Wood’s talent and beauty as they blossomed over the years. Not all those many rolls of film could make it to print, of course, and LIFE.com recently pored through its archives for the best never-before-published photos of the late, radiant star.

Wood had an allure — her Hollywood romances are nearly as renowned as her movies — that matched her extraordinary talent. Before she turned 25, she had collected three Academy Award nominations. But it’s West Side Story that most movie fans think of when they look back on her tragically abbreviated career: her white dress at the dance when she first meets Tony, her girlish delight in “feeling pretty,” and her ultimate fury at the childish men who cost her true love. And those eyes — her mesmerizing, doe-like eyes. Shakespeare could have written about them.

LA detectives re-open Natalie Wood death inquiry

By ANTHONY McCARTNEY
AP

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Homicide detectives have re-opened their investigation of Natalie Wood's death nearly 30 years after the actress drowned in the waters off Southern California in one of Hollywood's most enduring mysteries.

The renewed look at Wood's Nov. 29, 1981, death was prompted by new information detectives received about the case, Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said Thursday.

No additional details were provided, but a detective planned to hold a news conference Friday, and anyone with information about the case was being asked to contact sheriff's officials.

Wood, a three-time Oscar nominee famous for roles in "West Side Story," ''Rebel Without a Cause" and other Hollywood hits, was 43 when she died. Wood's drowning sparked tabloid speculation that foul play was involved, but Wagner and Wood's sister have dismissed any suggestion there was foul play.

LIFE celebrates 'West Side Story's 50th anniversary with never-before-seen photos of Natalie Wood

by Jeff Labrecque

Fifty years ago today, West Side Story opened in theaters and became an instant global sensation. Adapted from Arthur Laurents and Jerome Robbins’ 1957 Broadway musical — a modern, urban twist of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet — the film entranced audiences with its acrobatic choreography, finger-snapping songs, and heartbreaking tragedy. To commemorate the occasion, LIFE.com is currently showcasing a look back at the iconic film and a gallery of never-before-seen photos of Natalie Wood, who won the role of the innocent Puerto Rican girl in love with her brother’s sworn enemy only after Audrey Hepburn declined due to her pregnancy.

By the time 23-year-old Wood landed the role of Maria, she was already an established Hollywood veteran, a former child star (Miracle on 34th Street) who’d made the leap to more mature roles (Rebel Without a Cause). Though she wasn’t nominated for an Oscar for her role in West Side Story — her singing was dubbed by Marni Nixon and she instead received a Best Actress nod for the same year’s Splendor in the Grass, opposite Warren Beatty — the musical won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. (Wood lost to Sophia Loren, who took home the trophy for Two Women.)
