Behind The Scenes Of WEST SIDE STORY Original Recording With Sondheim & More

by Pat Cerasaro

A fascinating behind the scenes look at the legendary original cast of the iconic Leonard Bernstein/Stephen Sondheim/Arthur Laurents musical WEST SIDE STORY recording the show's classic cast album in 1957 is now available to view.

Sondheim is pictured offering advice and notes alongside notable producer Goddard Lieberson, while stars Larry Kert and Carol Lawrence sip tea in between takes in some of the shots.

Then, there is the dynamite diva herself, the one and only Chita Rivera, visibly moved by the rapturous music.

Plus, Larry Kert hits the floor of the studio to really get down while recording "Cool".

Cool, indeed!

To realize his impact, go back to 1957's "West Side Story." The film has footage of beautiful performances, including one of Larry Kert, a young performer who finds his confidence while performing "Something's Coming." Though "West Side Story" earned rave reviews, Sondheim was overlooked. To help Sondheim get noticed, Leonard Bernstein — who wrote the music — offered to remove his name from the lyrics and adjust the royalties. "Oh, who cares about royalties?" Sondheim quotes his younger self in the film. "If only someone put a gag in my mouth."

West Side Story was written for a large, young cast. There are lead roles, but the creators weren't looking for stars to fill them.

"Everybody has to seem to be a teenager, and be able to sing a very difficult score, act a very difficult book and dance very difficult dances," recalled Leonard Bernstein at a Dramatists Guild symposium a few years before his death.

Carol Lawrence was 23 when she was called in to audition — over and over again — for the lead role of Maria. The repeated callbacks earned the displeasure of Actors Equity, the performers' union.

"I did 13 auditions, and that got me into all kinds of trouble with Equity," Lawrence recalls. "They did write a law that was, for a while, known as the Carol Lawrence Law, and it says you cannot audition a person more than three times without paying them."

For her final audition, Lawrence was paired with a young chorus boy named Larry Kert, who was up for the part of Tony. The two rehearsed and memorized the balcony scene, but director Jerome Robbins wanted to make the moment spontaneous. He asked Kert to leave the theater.
