The Most Challenging West Side Story Scene For Rachel Zegler To Film

BY NIKKI MUNOZ

In 2021, "West Side Story" entered theaters throughout the world, marking the second release of a feature-length adaptation of the 1957 stage musical of the same name. Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Tony Kushner, the film introduces two rival gangs in New York City: the Jets, made up of young white people, and the Sharks, made up of Puerto Rican immigrants. The rivalry between the two gangs is heightened when Maria (Rachel Zegler), the younger sister of the Sharks' leader, Bernardo (David Alvarez), falls in love with one of the Jets, Tony (Ansel Elgort).

Ariana DeBose: ‘West Side Story Has Been An Incredibly Healing Project’
TheWrap Magazine: The Oscar nominee talked about celebrating her Puerto Rican heritage and inspiring the next generation to ”dare to dream“

Missy Schwartz

From the moment critics first got a taste of Steven Spielberg’s reimagining of “West Side Story,” they lavished praise on Ariana DeBose for her inspired interpretation of Anita, with many reviewers, including TheWrap’s, singling it out as the best part of the film. As the awards season unfolded, DeBose received recognition from SAG, BAFTA and dozens of critics groups—and on February 8, to the surprise of absolutely no one, she became an Oscar nominee for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, making history as the first openly queer woman of color to be nominated for acting.

‘West Side Story’: Creating a Period-Authentic, Danceable NYC for Steven Spielberg’s Musical Reinvention
Adam Stockhausen could earn his first Oscar with Spielberg for his gritty authenticity and danceable production design work.

Bill Desowitz

For a brief time, while working on Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch,” designing an array of hand-crafted sets from the ’50s and ’60s in Angoulême, France, production designer Adam Stockhausen was also prepping his Oscar-nominated “West Side Story.” Stockhausen multi-tasked while readying for Steven Spielberg’s reinvention of the iconic Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim musical about the delicate dance between love and hate and the difficult immigrant experience.

Ariana DeBose on Her First Oscar Nomination: ‘This Role Embodies Every Facet of Me’

By Sarah Bahr

Ariana DeBose wasn’t quite dancing in the streets Tuesday morning, but if you happened to be strolling along a certain New York City river around 9 a.m., you might have thought she was just another crazy New Yorker.

“I’m pretty sure I scared every runner on the path with my shrieking and jumping up and down,” she said by phone Tuesday morning, recalling the moment she learned she had been nominated for her first Oscar, for best supporting actress for her performance as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s remake of “West Side Story.”

West Side Story History Lessons From Music Producer David Newman

BY JACK GIROUX

It's almost as if destiny brought composer David Newman to Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story." Newman, who composed "Anastasia," "Galaxy Quest," and Danny DeVito's films, first worked on "West Side Story" as a teenager. Since then, the Broadway show and the 1961 film adaptation have been a major part of his career and life. When the time came to work on Spielberg's film as a music producer and score arranger, he was more than ready for the mammoth task.

Tony Kushner explains the biggest change he made to ‘West Side Story’ [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO INTERVIEW]

Christopher Rosen

When Steven Spielberg first pitched the idea of doing a new adaptation of “West Side Story” to Tony Kushner over breakfast eight years ago, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer was slightly apprehensive about the prospect. As Kushner recalled in an interview with the New York Times last year, he left their meeting and told his husband, the writer Mark Harris, “You’re not going to believe this. He’s lost his mind.”

How ‘West Side Story’ Brought Tony Winner Turned Soldier David Alvarez Back to Acting

Jude Dry

Adam Driver may be the most notable former Marine to earn an Oscar nomination, but David Alvarez could be the first Tony winner turned infantryman to nab one. In Steven Spielberg’s revelatory remake of “West Side Story,” a production that both makes a case for itself while honoring the achievements of its predecessor, the actor and dancer brings renewed life to the character of Bernardo. Trained as a ballet dancer before becoming one of the youngest people to win a Best Actor Tony for his performance in “Billy Elliot the Musical” on Broadway, Alvarez had all but left show business when he got the call to audition for Bernardo.

‘West Side Story’s’ Iris Menas Brings New Dimension to Old Character

Carole Horst
In the 1961 film version of “West Side Story,” the “tomboy” character Anybodys is a young teen, a stereotype you’d find on any sitcom of the era, dressed in dungarees and a T-shirt with a cute pixie haircut. But in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” transgender nonbinary actor iris menas (who prefers not to use capital letters) shines as an older Anybodys as the script by Tony Kushner illuminates the racism, harm of gentrification and the frustration felt by people on the fringes of a postwar society that doesn’t value them because they don’t fit in to the American dream narrative. Menas infuses Anybodys with all the pain of a person who has the confidence to know who they are but faces ignorance and hate on a daily basis.

Mike Faist Tries to Keep His Cool as Riff in ‘West Side Story’
The actor, a star of Broadway musicals like “Dear Evan Hansen,” talks about playing the leader of the Jets in Steven Spielberg’s remake.

By Dave Itzkoff

He’s the menacing gang leader who fights, frolics and finger-snaps his way through “West Side Story”: that’s Riff, the frontman of the Jets, who commands a cadre of lost boys in their turf battles against the Sharks, and takes center stage in numbers like “Jet Song” and “Cool.”

In Steven Spielberg’s remake with a screenplay by Tony Kushner, the role of Riff is played by Mike Faist, a 29-year-old veteran of the New York stage. Faist earned a Tony Award nomination in Broadway’s “Dear Evan Hansen,” where he originated the role of the title character’s would-be friend, Connor Murphy; he also performed in “Newsies the Musical,” understudying its hero, Jack Kelly.

Mike Faist on nihilistic teens, stardom, and "West Side Story"

by Nathaniel R

The reinvention of West Side Story (2021) has been the subject of much conversation since it opened, from Spielberg's incredibly enduring career, to the health of the movie musical genre, to the complicated subject of its Oscar prospects since the 1961 picture was a sweeper. The one thing that's felt especially unanimous in the response, though, is the exciting work from a trio of Broadway breakouts making a very big leap into movie stardom: Tony nominees Ariana DeBose and Mike Faist and Tony winner David Alvarez (Bernardo). I had the pleasure of sitting down with our new Riff, Mike Faist a couple of weeks ago to discuss the movie and his career (well, sort of. Read on).

‘West Side Story’ breakout Mike Faist on making Riff his own: ‘Start fresh and go back to the text, go back to square one’

Christopher Rosen

Fans of 1961’s “West Side Story,” such as actor Mike Faist, have a deep affection for actor Russ Tamblyn and his portrayal of reluctant Jet leader Riff in the Oscar-winning film. Based on the character Mercutio from William Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet,” the tragic Riff dominates the early portion of the musical – and Tamblyn’s singing and dancing prowess make a memorable impression that extends long after he exits the story.

Rita Moreno and Ariana DeBose: From One Anita to Another
The two actresses explain what the new “West Side Story” gets right, what the original lacked and why playing the role they’re both known for is so gut-wrenching.

By Melena Ryzik

“Hello, birthday queen,” Ariana DeBose said, greeting her “West Side Story” castmate Rita Moreno, newly and notably aged 90.

It was Sunday afternoon, and DeBose, 30, was in bed at her home on the Upper East Side, propped up on pillows, her rescue cats, Isadora Duncan and Frederick Douglass, occasionally parading through the Zoom call. Moreno was across the country, at home in Berkeley, Calif., camera-ready above the waist in a red sweater and mega-jewelry, but stealthily in pink pajamas and fluffy slipper socks below. How were her many birthday celebrations? “I’m happy to report that they’re endless,” she said. “I do feel queenly and royal.”

Moreno, who arrived in New York from Puerto Rico in 1936, famously won an Oscar — the first Latina to do so — for playing Anita in the 1961 “West Side Story.” DeBose, who grew up in North Carolina and describes herself as Afro-Latina, is earning critical raves and awards chatter as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s new version, which also features Moreno in the newly created role of Valentina, a shopkeeper.
