Fifty-five years ago Tuesday, Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise’s film adaptation of West Side Story premiered in — where else? — New York City. The iconic Hollywood musical went on to win 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress (for George Chakiris and Rita Moreno, respectively).

Included are many of the songs and also included is a comparison of the film and the behind-the-scenes footage. What the cast can be seen doing at 2:53 is a "rain dance". They would do rain dances in order to stop filming to rest. Eventually they were told to stop because it actually worked!

Hugh Jackman and Jimmy Fallon did a spontaneous West Side Story performance on Thursday’s episode of Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, complete with dancing and snapping.
Fallon was talking about how his dad used to both sing doo-wop on Brooklyn street corners in the ’60s and travel with a gang. “Not gangs now, but it was like West Side Story-type of gangs,” said Fallon. Naturally, he and Jackman burst into “Jet Song” from West Side Story complete with the musical’s famous snapping and iconic dance moves. The mini-performance was the perfect occasion for Hugh Jackman to show off his musical theater talent.

This week, I caught up with the company of Orlando Shakespeare Theater's WEST SIDE STORY!
They dazzled me with a performance of their dance from the "America" portion of the show, and then it was time for me to put my dancing shoes on. While I have a long way to go to catch up to the amazing talent and grace of the cast, I had an AMAZING time learning the choreography and I have a new-found appreciation for the work these dancers put into this outstanding show. Don't miss Orlando Shakespeare Theater's production of WEST SIDE STORY, running now through October 9. You can get your tickets at OrlandoShakes.org.
