There may be a rumble among movie musical fans when Steven Spielberg's West Side Story remake premieres in theaters on Dec. 10 — 60 years after the beloved 1961 version, co-directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. But George "Bernardo" Chakiris and Russ "Riff" Tamblyn already know which side they'll be on... and this time, it's the same one.

George Chakiris celebrates 60 years of 'West Side Story' at Redford Theatre
Kurt Anthony Krug
Special to The Detroit News
George Chakiris vividly recalls winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Bernardo in 1961’s “West Side Story.”
“(It) was kind of an out-of-body experience,” said Chakiris, 87, of Los Angeles. “At the time, I had no idea what difference an Oscar can make. I was professionally naive. I certainly knew it felt good!”

The cheekiest line from West Side Story's 'America' was actually improvised
By Maureen Lee Lenker
I like to be in America...
West Side Story's riotous production number "America" remains one of the most iconic musical moments ever put to screen. But it turns out one of its cheekiest moments was improvised.
While sitting down with TCM for a 60th-anniversary reunion as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, and Russ Tamblyn reminisced about their time making the 1961 Best Picture winner. But they also revealed some behind-the-scenes stories, including the fact that the line "I know you do!" as a rejoinder to Anita's "I like the island Manhattan" in the "America" number was improvised.

West Side Story at 60: An oral history of the film's shocking Oscar triumph
Rita Moreno and George Chakiris reflect on the iconic 1961 movie-musical, from casting to the night of their Academy Awards wins.
By Lynette Rice
Sixty years after West Side Story became a smash hit at the box office, Rita Moreno, 89, and George Chakiris, 86, have vivid memories of their time on set and how it led to their historic Oscar wins. They're also acutely aware that what was deemed acceptable in 1961 — in Chakiris' case, a Greek man from Oho playing a Puerto Rican gang leader — would likely not be allowed to happen today.

When you're a Jet and a Shark: West Side Story's George Chakiris
Chris Wiegand
“I don’t think I was good enough,” confesses George Chakiris. “I was too nervous.” Zooming from Los Angeles, the 86-year-old star is not appraising his Oscar-winning role in West Side Story or his stints as a chorus dancer in golden age musicals with Marilyn Monroe and Cyd Charisse. He is recalling appearing alongside Compo, Clegg and Foggy in an episode of Last of the Summer Wine. What sort of country-lane hijinks did that involve? “I was a movie director or something. I don’t remember … Isn’t that awful?”
