Why Rita Moreno’s New Character in Steven Spielberg’s 'West Side Story' is the Film’s Best Update
BY SEAN NAUGHTON
There's a place for us, somewhere a place for us.
When a remake of West Side Story was announced, many people questioned the need for its existence. Unconvinced frowns eventually gave way to reluctant nods when the name Steven Spielberg came attached to that announcement. When the film was finally released, much of the skepticism fizzled as Spielberg’s retelling of the classic story justified its existence with beautifully choreographed numbers and many bold changes to the material. Rita Moreno and Ariana DeBose: From One Anita to Another
The two actresses explain what the new “West Side Story” gets right, what the original lacked and why playing the role they’re both known for is so gut-wrenching.
By Melena Ryzik
“Hello, birthday queen,” Ariana DeBose said, greeting her “West Side Story” castmate Rita Moreno, newly and notably aged 90.
It was Sunday afternoon, and DeBose, 30, was in bed at her home on the Upper East Side, propped up on pillows, her rescue cats, Isadora Duncan and Frederick Douglass, occasionally parading through the Zoom call. Moreno was across the country, at home in Berkeley, Calif., camera-ready above the waist in a red sweater and mega-jewelry, but stealthily in pink pajamas and fluffy slipper socks below. How were her many birthday celebrations? “I’m happy to report that they’re endless,” she said. “I do feel queenly and royal.”
Moreno, who arrived in New York from Puerto Rico in 1936, famously won an Oscar — the first Latina to do so — for playing Anita in the 1961 “West Side Story.” DeBose, who grew up in North Carolina and describes herself as Afro-Latina, is earning critical raves and awards chatter as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s new version, which also features Moreno in the newly created role of Valentina, a shopkeeper.

How Rita Moreno Could Break Multiple Oscar Records With ‘West Side Story’ Remake
By Clayton Davis
After being delayed a year due to the pandemic, Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated musical remake of the best picture winner “West Side Story” had its first screenings this week before critics, journalists and varying awards and guild voters. The social media reaction has been loud and palpable throughout the Oscar chamber, which could bring about a late December entry run for the best picture prize, which would be the first since Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” (2017) and Clint Eastwood’s “Million Dollar Baby” (2004).
There’s incredible history to be made if the buzz is replicated and embraced throughout the awards season. Rita Moreno became the first, and still, only Latina to ever win an acting Oscar for the 1961 original version as Anita, and she could be welcomed back into the fold, now as the newly created character Valentina, with the remake.

Rita Moreno: Pathbreaker, Activist and ‘A Kick in the Pants’
The actress discusses being the subject of a new documentary, and spending eight-plus decades in the spotlight.
By Melena Ryzik
Rita Moreno was all of 6 when she made her professional debut, duetting with her Spanish dance instructor on a stage in Greenwich Village. “I remember every detail,” she said. She wore a traditional, resplendently ruffled dress. “We danced a jota — that was a country dance. And we played castanets. My mom let me put on lipstick — I was so thrilled.” It was 1937.
For the next eight-plus decades, Moreno, who will turn 90 in December, has found her way to the spotlight. And she is still dancing, as we see in the opening moments of a new documentary, “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It,” which shows her kicking up her strappy heels at her own Cuba-themed birthday party.
