How ‘West Side Story’ Brought Tony Winner Turned Soldier David Alvarez Back to Acting

Adam Driver may be the most notable former Marine to earn an Oscar nomination, but David Alvarez could be the first Tony winner turned infantryman to nab one. In Steven Spielberg’s revelatory remake of “West Side Story,” a production that both makes a case for itself while honoring the achievements of its predecessor, the actor and dancer brings renewed life to the character of Bernardo. Trained as a ballet dancer before becoming one of the youngest people to win a Best Actor Tony for his performance in “Billy Elliot the Musical” on Broadway, Alvarez had all but left show business when he got the call to audition for Bernardo.

Filming for the Steven Spielberg remake of Leonard Bernstein’s hit 1957 musical is well under way – and now fans have been treated to a glimpse of the choreography.
Last week, it was announced that Steven Spielberg has cast Ariana DeBose as Anita in his 2020 remake of Bernstein’s West Side Story – and now a series of photographs showing the actress dancing on set have been shared for the first time.

Steven Spielberg has cast 17-year-old high schooler Rachel Zegler as Maria in his remake of “West Side Story.”

ArianaDeBose, David Alvarez, Josh Andres Rivera, Rachel Zegler
She will make her film debut opposite Ansel Elgort as Tony. Broadway veteran Ariana DeBose has been cast as Anita and David Alvarez as Bernardo. Theater performer Josh Andrés Rivera has been cast as Chino.
