BWW Review: WEST SIDE STORY at Crown Theatre
Aussie production of musical theatre classic wows Perth.

by David Bravos

The eagerly anticipated Opera Australia production of WEST SIDE STORY opened at Crown Theatre this week, and the promise of a spectacular retelling of this classic was delivered on, with nothing lost from postponements and audience restrictions. The talented cast brought the audience on a rollercoaster of emotion with their brilliant acting and singing, whilst the famously complex dance sequences played out perfectly.

West Side Story review – hip-swinging, skirt-twirling love story gets gritty

Mark Fisher

It’s not every show that comes with an endorsement from the local chief constable. But taking pride of place in the programme for West Side Story is Leicestershire police’s Simon Cole, a signal of how seriously director Nikolai Foster takes the violence between the feuding Jets and Sharks. In a production as gritty and confrontational as it is musically accomplished, Foster goes further than most in eradicating the musical theatre wholesomeness of this classic show.

BWW Review: North Carolina Theatre's WEST SIDE STORY

by Jeffrey Kare

Inspired by William Shakespeare's famous play, Romeo & Juliet, West Side Story is set in the Upper West Side neighborhood of New York City in the mid-1950s. The story explores the rivalry between two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The Jets, a white gang, and the Sharks, who are immigrants from Puerto Rico. Meanwhile, Tony, a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang's leader, Riff, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks.

Must-See WEST SIDE STORY Brings Beautiful Heartbreak & Hope to the Milwaukee Repertory Theater

by Kelsey Lawler

There's a rumble from the orchestra as the lights dim in the Powerhouse. That rumble brings you into the story -- a place, a time, a city. There's anticipation and foreboding. Even if you've seen West Side Story twenty times before -- even if you know it's based on Romeo & Juliet and therefore tragedy is imminent -- the Milwaukee Rep has succeeded in giving every theater-loving person countless reasons to come out and see it once more.

BWW Interview: Larry Raben of WEST SIDE STORY at 5-Star Theatricals

by Cary Ginell

With gun violence and immigration continuing to be front page news, West Side Story remains one of our most relevant and thought-provoking musicals. Since its debut on Broadway 60 years ago, the show has been subject to much tinkering by producers and directors wishing to update it, by incorporating ethnic-relevant casts and even, in the case of the most recent Broadway revival, dialog and songs sung in Spanish. 5-Star Theatricals' forthcoming version of the show, which debuts at the Kavli Theatre July 26, promises more reverence to Jerome Robbins' original production, but includes some innovations as well. We spoke with director Larry Raben recently during a rehearsal session.
