BWW Review: Feeling Pretty at Orlando Shakes' WEST SIDE STORY
by Kimberly Moy
It's a Broadway classic with show tunes that have permeated popular culture. This year Orlando Shakes brings WEST SIDE STORY to its mainstage to kick off its 28th season. With everything that Orlando has endured this Summer, WEST SIDE STORY has never been more relevant. At the start of the show, two cast members come out, one speaking in English, the other in Spanish to dedicated the performance to one of the 49 victims of the Pulse tragedy. It is a touching tribute that fits this story well.

Orlando Shakes puts audiences right in the middle of West Side Story’s star-crossed romance
Western Union
By Seth Kubersky
Somewhere in America tonight, West Side Story is being performed, just as it has been nearly every evening since its 1957 Broadway debut. Leonard Bernstein's score and Jerome Robbins' staging are inarguably immortal, but can a Romeo and Juliet set among Eisenhower-era youth still speak to audiences in the age of Trump? According to Orlando Shakespeare Theater artistic director Jim Helsinger and his cast and crew, not only is Tony and Maria's tragedy more relevant here and now than ever before, but the production they are opening this weekend is the most intimate West Side you've ever experienced.

Romeo and Tony - A West Side Story Question
For school, I’m doing a research project on the differences and similarities of the character Tony from West Side Story and Romeo from Romeo and Juliet. I was just wondering, if anyone working in the show would like to tell me their take on that (How are the two characters alike and different?). Thank you so much, have a great day! -Hannah
Drew Foster - who plays Riff in the national tour of West Side Story (and is a bit of a Shakespeare expert) offered this response to Hannah, a student from New Jersey who attends Washington Township High School. She is well on her way to an A+!

"This version is more violent than the original musical," said actor Drew Foster during the afternoon of opening night in Austin. "Laurents updated it to show what real gang members are about -- that they would be capable of killing someone. It is more realistic, the racial remarks have been upped. The gang speaks Spanish to each other when they're together."
Foster and Nathan Keen -- another actor in the touring company -- are recent college graduates, but their professional careers began when they were children. Foster, who studied at The Juilliard School , started performing in regional theater in Florida at age 6; Keen, a graduate of Otterbein College in Ohio, got the acting bug in Detroit at age 4. Keen appeared in touring companies of "Beauty and the Beast," "Les Miserables" and "Ragtime."
They have both been with "West Side Story" since the touring show started in October and will be with the run when it ends in July 2012.
"It's live stage combat," Keen said about the action in the play. "Every actor learns in school how to make fights look real and safe, and sometimes we get hurt, if something's done the wrong way." Broken noses happen, and with all the dancing in the musical, "dancing hurts."
The pair demonstrated just how they "fake" a fight, as Foster hit Keen in the stomach with a baseball bat and Keen doubled over with a shout of pain. In reality, the bat was not wooden, but made of flexible foam, and the cry of pain -- well, it was good acting.
For all the action and the intense physical demands of "West Side Story," the pair said they love being in one of the most famous musicials every created.
"We're very lucky to be part of the cast," Foster said.
