Hal Prince, Giant of Broadway and Reaper of Tonys, Dies at 91

Hal Prince, the Broadway royal and prodigious Tony winner who produced or directed (and sometimes both) many of the most enduring musicals in theater history, including “West Side Story,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Cabaret,” “Sweeney Todd” and “The Phantom of the Opera,” the longest-running show in Broadway history, died on Wednesday in Reykjavik, Iceland. Hal Prince Discusses Stage To Screen Adaptations & WEST SIDE STORY

Legendary director Harold Prince opens up about the differences between stage and screen adaptations in a new interview clip now available to view.

"I think you should take a musical in the theatre and analyze what you can do in the theatre better and more different than what they can do on film or on television," Prince asserts.

"Musicals don't necessarily make good movies because of the nature of what the stage is," Prince adds.

Sondheim, Prince, Rivera to Receive 2013 Jerome Robbins Award

Broadway director-producer Harold Prince, composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim, and dancer-actor Chita Rivera are the recipients of the 2013 Jerome Robbins Award, the Jerome Robbins Foundation announced Jan. 25.

“My colleagues and I could not think of three greater Broadway luminaries than Hal, Chita, and Stephen,” Christopher Pennington, executive director of the Jerome Robbins Foundation, said in a statement. “They were obvious choices for their astounding body of work, for their commitment to and passion for musical theatre, and for bringing their vitality and talent to the American stage for more than half a century.”

Broadway : the American Musical, Episode Five : Tradition . The first ten minutes are devoted to West Side Story and includes interviews with Jerome Robbins, Stephen Sondheim, Hal Prince, Arthur Laurents, critic Frank Rich, composer Jonathan Sheffer and Julie Taymor. Clips include one from the Ed Sullivan Show of Carol Lawrence and Larry Kert singing Tonight, clips of American & Cool from the film and a few stills from the 1957 production rehearsals.

Well worth catching if you can find it.

West Side Story: the hit that almost didn’t happen

It’s the best musical that you almost never saw.

West Side Story starts a run for Dancap Productions at the Toronto Centre for the Arts this week. It’s the touring company from the most recent Broadway revival of a show that everyone now not only considers a classic but credits with having taken the musical theatre in new and darker directions.

And it almost didn’t happen. Three times.
