San Francisco Symphony's WEST SIDE STORY Nominated for GRAMMY Award
Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony's live concert recording of Leonard Bernstein's complete score for the musical West Side Story is nominated for a Grammy Award yesterday in the category of Best Musical Theater Album.
The album features a stellar Broadway cast including Cheyenne Jackson and Alexandra Silber, and members of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus. The performances were recorded live at Davies Symphony Hall in late June and early July 2013 after Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony became the first orchestra to receive permission from all four West Side Story rights-holders to perform and record the musical score in its entirety in a concert setting.

BWW CD Review: San Francisco Symphony's WEST SIDE STORY is a Triumph
by David Clarke
When it comes to contemporary classics in American musical theatre, just the sheer mention of Leonard Bernstein's WEST SIDE STORY, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents, is enough to get any fan of the medium listening. This beloved masterpiece first premiered in 1957 and Leonard Bernstein had hoped to change the face of the American musical theater with it. That goal wasn't quite accomplished, but his clever orchestrations, drive and ambition, and unique construction made the show a hallmark of the genre that is still adored and studied today.
San Francisco Symphony, with Michael Tilson Thomas as conductor, presented an enthralling staged concert version of WEST SIDE STORY in the summer of 2013. With an immense knowledge of the musical and the man who created the score, Michael Tilson Thomas has expertly lead the opulent San Francisco Orchestra and a cast of brilliant talent through the score. Recorded live from June 27 to July 2, 2013 at the Davies Symphony Hall at the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center, the dual disc album is definitely one of the loveliest recordings of the score you'll ever hear.

Yesterday I received the Michael Tilson Thomas, Cheyenne Jackson, Alexandra Silber cd and it includes two brief essays, one by Jamie Bernstein and the other by Rita Moreno.
Here's Rita's :
I hadn't hear the score of "West Side Story" performed live for more than fifty years - the last time being when I was on the Goldwyn Studios soundstage to pre-record my numbers for the movie. As I headed into Davies Symphony Hall I was filled with excitement and anticipation - I would get to hear the first-ever live concert performance of the original Broadway score.
From the first note...I moved to the edge of my seat, with every nerve ending prepared to receive this astonishing musical assault of notes, chords, and complex rhythms, held together by the sinew of one man's genius. For me, the fiery passion, wit, yearning, dissonance, intensity, joy and sharp angles of this work-for-the-ages were all present and fresh again. Thank you Maestro Michael Tilson Thomas, the San Francisco Symphony, and a superb ensemble. .
Symphony, Moreno feel pretty good about 'West Side Story' CD
Tony Bravo
"Hello, I'm Chita Rivera," EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winner Rita Moreno cracked when introduced at the release party of the San Francisco Symphony's new live recording of "West Side Story."

Album review: S.F. Symphony, Bernstein's 'West Side Story'
Joshua Kosman
Last June's season-ending performances of Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story" by Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony was a memorable occasion on several fronts - not merely a dynamic evening in Davies Symphony Hall but a bold claim for the musical brilliance of the score even in isolation from its theatrical trappings. Not that many of us needed convincing, mind you - the greatness of this music has never been in doubt. But the Symphony's new live recording (available on iTunes this week and on disc next month) brings it all back. To hear this recording is to marvel again at the rhythmic vivacity of Bernstein's writing, his extraordinary range of reference, and the way he adapts the various strains of midcentury American music to his creative vision without weakening their essential character. The orchestra sounds splendid, especially the percussion section, and the cast - led by the great Cheyenne Jackson as Tony - is almost uniformly strong. And "Somewhere," sung with limpid grace by soprano Julia Bullock (whose career has taken off since last year) sounds as beautiful as ever.

WEST SIDE STORY Still Shows Many Faces
by Erica Miner
The day Leonard Bernstein died, a sense of gut-wrenching loss pervaded the musical world. Anyone who had watched and listened to his extraordinary music making could not help but be affected by his passion and reverence for music. Those of us lucky enough to have known and worked with him and availed ourselves of his wisdom, still hold deep affection and respect for him, along with a feeling that we have been blessed many times over.
