WEST SIDE STORY: 50th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Review

by Nico

What do you call something that combines gang warfare, race relations and Shakespeare? Well, if you add infectious songs and unbelievable dancing, you call it West Side Story. More Jets and Sharks in our review of the 50th Anniversary West Side Story Blu-ray after the jump.

My wife loves musicals. I love movies. I thought watching West Side Story together might be time well spent as a couple. As it turns out, for me, it was time well spent as a film-lover and student of the craft.

'West Side Story' Debuts in Glorious Hi-Def

George Thomas
Cleveland Movie Examiner

When the great Mikhail Baryshnikov deems it necessary to offer commentary on a film’s legacy, then you must pay attention.

But when it comes to West Side Story (No rating, MGM, $16.99-$44.99 depending on version, 5-of-5 stars), no one ever had to get me to pay attention. Baryshnikov’s presence is still welcome, however.

The film – quite simply – is one of the top three musicals to ever grace Broadway and, without a doubt, it’s the best adaptation of a Broadway musical for the screen.

SOUND OFF: WEST SIDE STORY On Blu-ray - Pow!

by Pat Cerasaro

WEST SIDE STORY is definitely back in a big way - in the last two weeks alone it has had its very own tribute episode on GLEE featuring four of the show’s most famous songs, and, also, Fathom re-released the new HD remastering of the film in movie theaters nationwide for a one-night-only showing - so, given its 50th anniversary, the time has definitely come to pay tribute to one of the finest American movie musicals ever manufactured, which itself was based on one of the most innovative, controversial and progressive Broadway shows in history. From “A Boy Like That” to “Tonight” to “Somewhere” and beyond, this is a score that has enraptured two or three entire generations - with very, very good reason; these songs are simply musical and lyrical magic. Truly, this is as good as musical theatre gets, and, furthermore, the 1960 film version by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise is just as good. The combination of the two? Transcendent. No, never before has WEST SIDE STORY presented the power, potency, prescience and put forth the plosive overall “pow!” to the system - heart, mind and body - than it does, here, now, on the absolutely sensational new 3-disc 50th Anniversary Blu-ray edition, which will be released on Tuesday. I was lucky enough to get a copy early and I was simply blown away in every single imaginable way. A red, hot and blue all-American movie masterpiece given its full, magnificent, ecstatic due on Blu-ray. Be prepared to be blown away. Bam!

West Side Story – Blu-ray Review

By Dave Roper

The Jets and Sharks are forever brawling over the turf of the Upper West Side of Manhattan, trying to protect their space. Tony, formerly the leader of the Jets, but having more recently pulled away, meets Maria, a young Puerto Rican woman (and brother of Sharks-leader Bernardo) at a dance and they fall instantly in love. But can they be together despite being from opposite sides in a deep-seated gang war?

West Side Story is one of those musicals that either everyone has seen, or everyone feels like they have seen. For my part, it was only in sitting down to watch it for this review that I found I had never seen it all the way through, having caught many snippets of it during that period in my teens when my sister watched it on a seemingly endless VHS loop. What it is, to be blunt, is one of the very finest musicals ever committed to the screen, almost matchless in the quality of its songs, dancing and emotional resonance.

For those of us who don't live in NYC and were too poor to go to the Dancers Over 40 documentary event, count your blessings! Though the documentary itself won't be released, they did film the panel and Q&A portion with Harvey Evans (Mouthpiece), Bert Michaels (Snowboy) and David Bean (Tiger), and will send a DVD copy to everyone who buys DO40 membership. It's a very reasonable amount, and a great way to support a wonderful organization while getting your West Side Story fix. :)

Restoring West Side Story for its 50th Anniversary

Classic musical West Side Story will be back on the big screen from 16 September, celebrating its 50th anniversary in an all-new restoration from Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) Studios.

Starring Natalie Wood, Russ Tamblyn and George Chakiris, West Side Story went on to win 10 Academy Awards and explores the rivalry between two teenage street gangs – white working class Jets and Puerto Rican Sharks. When a member of the Jets falls in love with the sister of the Sharks’ leader, things look hopeful at first, but rapidly go downhill.

West Side Story was the first of three musicals that acclaimed filmmaker Robert Wise directed in the large format Panavision 70 and Todd-AO processes. It was shot in 65mm for intended theatrical projection in 70mm and six-track stereo sound. A 35mm reduction negative was also produced to allow the film to be shown more widely.

West Side Story: 50th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Pre-Orders Now Available

by Matthew Smith

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will give the 1961 musical West Side Story its Blu-ray debut in a 50th Anniversary Edition on November 15th. The studio is claiming that the film, which won 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture, has undergone hundreds of hours of restoration and will feature a 2:20:1 aspect ratio with 7.1 HD-DTS Master Audio.

The film version of West Side Story is an adaptation of the stage play in which the relationship of two lovers is complicated by the animosity of two rival street gangs, akin to Romeo and Juliet. The two leads are Tony (Richard Beymer), a member of the Jets gang, and his love interest Maria (Natalie Wood), who is a sister to the leader of the Sharks gang. Like most musicals, the film is best remembered for its songs and dance sequences, which include "Maria", "America", "Tonight" and "I Feel Pretty".

WEST SIDE STORY

Perhaps more influential than "successful" during its initial run (it didn't win the Tony for Best Musical, nor did it have an exceptionally long run during its premiere engagement), I would suspect that when most people hear "West Side Story," they think of the film version that grossed millions and won ten Oscars, including Pest Picture. Based on the 1957 musical with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents (with an obvious assist from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet), the 1961 film version, co-directed by Robert Wise and the play's original director and choreographer Jerome Robbins, stars Natalie Wood as Maria, a newly-arrived Puerto Rican girl who works in an upper West Side Manhattan dress shop with Anita (Rita Moreno), the girlfriend of Bernardo (George Chakiris), Maria's gangleader brother.

Battling Bernardo's encroaching Puerto Rican "Shark" gang are the established white "Jets," led by Riff (Russ Tamblyn), who call the small section of streets and crumbling tenements where they live home turf. After tit-for-tat violence escalates between the rivals, Riff decides an all-out rumble is called for, to end once and for all the ambitions of the Puerto Rican gang. To aid his efforts, Riff calls on his old friend and former leader of the gang, Tony (Richard Beymer), who has forsaken membership in the gang because he realized the pointlessness of the petty back-and-forth squabbling inherent in the subculture. But Riff, playing on old loyalties, convinces Tony to at least show up at the dance, where Tony meets Maria, and it's love at first sight. Unfortunately, Bernardo's hatred for whites ("They only want one thing from a Puerto Rican girl."), well earned on the streets, blinds him to Tony's sincerity, and he sends Maria home. Riff and Bernardo agree to a war council, where later, Tony suggests a "fair fight" with no weapons. Maria, upon learning of the coming fight, pleads with Tony to intervene and stop it, setting into motion a series of tragic events that destroys the one ray of hope in the neighborhood's festering racial strife.

I bet everyone either owns this or has it already, but when I was at Target today I totally FLIPPED OUT upon finding WSS on DVD AND (there's more?!) West Side Memories, with (this is from memory) behind the scenes photos and interviews with people and OHMICROD I want it...

I was at imdb and I read that off-set the Sharks & the Jets were supposed to play pranks on each other to keep tensions high while filming. I thought that was cute.

That is all.
